Michael is a lifelong Boston resident and a proud graduate of UMass Medical School. He practices primary care and addiction medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. Dr. Hamrock has a unique perspective and understanding of the many serious immediate and long-term health risks associated with firefighting from his 20 years of combined service with the Boston Fire Department as a firefighter and the department Medical Examiner. These experiences inspired him to develop protocols on Comprehensive Firefighter Physical Exams for primary care physicians and help create guidelines for proper evaluations, rehab, and hydration of firefighters on the fire ground.
Dr. Hamrock runs marathons with the Boston Fire running team and is an active member of the Boston Fire/Metro Fire Critical Incident Stress Management Team. He has a special interest in motivating and empowering firefighters for better self-care, post-traumatic growth, and resiliency building skills. Dr. Hamrock strongly believes that the Last Call Foundation’s partnership with the BFD will be instrumental in establishing a much needed comprehensive firefighter health and fitness program to help prevent the exceedingly high rates of orthopedic injuries, heart disease, and cancer in Boston firefighters.
